The Power of Shared Learning

This week I spent time with the instructors of the Milwaukee Digital Media Conference at the Milwaukee County Zoo. We did all of the assignments that participants will be doing at the conference.

The theme of the conference is The Power of Us! What is meant by this statement is that we can learn more together than we can alone. This week when working with my colleagues I learned about a lot of cool new stuff.

Spore
I am on the waiting list to get my copy of the online game Spore due out later this summer. Juli told me that you can already start creating your creature at the site.

Where is Microsoft headed?

I read two articles this morning, one from Business Week and one from the Economist about the future of Microsoft in the wake of the departure of Bill Gates.

I found some of the things that Microsoft is working on could have some really interesting implications for education. One of the things Microsoft is trying to get into is cloud computing, also known as distributed computing. Wikipedia explains that "the services that can be delivered from the cloud have expanded past web applications to include storage, raw computing, or access to any number of specialized service". Microsoft is looking at it in terms of getting everything connected. According The Economist Article, it is working on something call "Live Mesh", "a connected tissue that brings together devices in the cloud. It will enable users to synchronize files on lots of computers" (pg. 77).

The Business Week article talked about how Microsoft is developing products using natural user interfaces such as speech, touch, and pen technologies.

Lately, The Stephens Group has been undergoing a lot of changes and more and more we are becoming our own cloud company that does a lot of what The Economist referred to as "mind share".
